Best Cafes in Bondi

The days start early in Bondi. Get out shortly after sunrise and you'll spot numerous surfers, swimmers and people on their way to yoga. And of course, walkers and runners tackling the picturesque Bondi to Bronte route.

By mid-morning the area's cafes swell with people enjoying the salty breeze and refuelling post-exercise. The menus mostly lean healthy – don't expect to find too many burgers, or desserts masquerading as breakfast dishes. Kombucha, fresh juices and acai bowls are much more Bondi's style. Here are our favourite spots to take it all in.

  • There isn’t really anything this breezy bar and diner can’t do. There’s a Mediterranean thread running throughout, from the flavours on the menu to the day-to-night vibe. A spot on the footpath can't be beaten at golden hour.

  • A classic beachside all-rounder, from morning to night.

  • The beachside outpost for one of Sydney’s seminal cafes.

  • Coffee on tap, fresh salads and a roaring cookie dough trade.

  • All kinds of chewy, dense bagels are boiled on-site at this Bondi favourite every day. For the classic Ashkenazi-Jewish deli experience, go for the signature with chopped liver, egg, onion and a side of zingy pickles.

  • This cafe takes inspiration from Israel’s well-known market places.

  • A local institution that's been going for more than two decades.

  • Walk by the unmissable mural on Curlewis Street and you’ll probably spot the same customers that have been coming to this teeny cafe and wine bar since day one – and we don’t blame them. Sandwiches, salads and good wine lie within.

  • A family-friendly spot that’s been looking after locals since 1997.

  • Quality coffees and rare books in what locals call their “Hotel California”.

  • Extensive antipasti, breakfast, and a range of classics from a celebrated chef.

  • A beach nook tucked up off the main Bondi drag.

  • Mediterranean, organic, with Five Senses coffee and a beautiful fit-out.

  • A tiny eatery specialising in piadinas, the Italian version of gozleme.

  • A “wellness concierge” that includes a gym with sweeping beach views and a farm-to-plate cafe.

  • A hole-in-the-wall spot where you can grab chewy bagels stuffed with cured salmon or salted beef, with a side of crisps and pickles. Or grab house-made egg dip and schmears to take home.

  • Wellness as preached by a naturopath and herbalist.

  • A low-key cafe with pool and ocean views and a small menu, where standard coffees are double-shot.

  • Excellent sandwiches, big salads and natural wines are the recipe for a good time at S’wich, a new-wave sandwich diner in the centre of Bondi. In the evenings it transforms into a bar with global craft beers, Margarita seltzers from Cantina OK, pre-mixed Campari spritzes and Negronis made in-house.

  • Rock up to the beachfront patio for oysters with mignonette and kingfish ceviche, or settle in for a breakfast and lunch menu full of easy classics.
