Julia Connelly designs and makes vibrant cotton and silk head wraps by hand in Bondi. She takes care of the entire production process by herself at home on her sewing machine.

“I love tropical holiday and resort wear – that whole relaxed style really appeals to me,” says Connelly. “This, combined with feminine and floral designs, has inspired my collection,” she says about her label, Julz Jane.

Connelly began designing wraps in September 2016 and launched her website two months later. “Design is something I’ve always been passionate about,” she says. “I started an Etsy shop, and it grew from there.”

The wraps are made from 100 per cent pure silk or cotton, and in some instances a blend of the two fabrics. All wraps feature elastic backs to provide comfort and a good fit. “Bringing in silk head wraps has made my range more diverse,” she says. It means her collection can be worn to more formal occasions as well as to the beach.

There’s also a smaller range of kids head wraps made from a soft, organic jersey fabric. They come in two sizes, one for toddlers and one for children aged three to 10.

Cushion covers are also available on her website, but they’re a minor part of the brand. “I work part-time and have a child, and they’re very time-consuming to make. I’ve decided to pursue head wraps. They’re a bit easier to make and are lots more fun,” she says.

“I have so many ideas I want to launch in the near future; primarily ‘neck wraps’, bun wraps and silk eye masks.”
