After 62 years in business, first near Railway Square, then at King Street Wharf, The Malaya’s Grosvenor Place location sees the institution in a two-storey Harry Seidler-designed building. And there’s a lovely terrace that looks down the length of George Street.

A pioneer of Southeast Asian cuisine in Sydney, The Malya’s menu remains unchanged. Fresh seafood is always available (rather than by advance order), and there’s just one new dish: babi kesam glass noodles, featuring pork belly and pickled mustard greens. Old favourites include dry-fried mud crab, XO pippies and the original Malaya Curry, made with a spice blend that was developed six decades ago.

Plus, find 160 bottles on the wine list, mostly Australian plus a handful of German rieslings.
