Long Chim, David Thompson’s high-volume ode to Bangkok street food, is opening along the Crown Riverwalk on January 16.

If the dining experience in Perth and the original Long Chim at Singapore’s Marina Bay Sands are any indication of what to expect, Melbourne diners should brace themselves for uncensored tastes of the Thai capital.

In addition to definitive renditions of Siamese staples such as pad Thai, green curry and tom-yum soup, the Long Chim menu also includes lesser-seen dishes such as sour orange curries (curries that are boiled rather than made with coconut cream) and larp of Chiang Mai, an incendiary blend of chicken, pepper and no small amount of chilli. To drink, expect a strong focus on cocktails as well as spice-friendly beers and wines.

The restaurant will be Thompson’s third in Australia following the opening of Long Chim Perth in November 2015 and Long Chim Sydney last August.

After making his name during the ’90s at seminal Sydney Thai restaurants Darley Street Thai and Sailors Thai, Thompson opened Nahm in London, the first Thai restaurant in the world to earn a Michelin star. In 2010, he opened another Nahm at the Metropolitan in Bangkok. The restaurant was named Best Restaurant in Asia by Restaurant magazine in 2014 and placed at number 37 in this year’s World’s 50 Best Restaurants awards.

Long Chim Melbourne opens for dinner at Crown Melbourne from Monday 16 January. Hours will be extended to include lunch bookings from early February. Reservations are now open – call (03) 8582 3082 to book.
