Lines out the door at ice-cream and gelato shops aren’t uncommon sights during the Melbourne winter. But as the weather warms up, the real scoop season starts. Here are three new ice-creameries and gelaterias to visit.
Good Daze Canteen
316 Brunswick Street, Fitzroy
There are 21 flavours inspired by sweets from around the world at this charming scoop shop run by two uni mates who bonded over specialty ice-cream and gelato.
There’s Thai mango sticky rice where coconut rice pudding is swirled into Alphonso mango sorbet; Iceland- and Sweden-inspired skyr yoghurt and lingonberries; and the Aussie Milo Milk Crunch, which also nods to Milo dinosaurs, an iced drink commonly found in Singapore and Malaysia.

SIGN UPLactose-averse friends can pop a $1 Lacteeze at the counter, or order from the seven vegan scoops, including Korean fruit-punch-inspired hwachae and a miso peanut butter caramel inspired by a viral New York Times cookie.
Luther’s Scoops
796 High Street, Thornbury
When Kenny Lover closed its ice-cream shop in Thornbury earlier this year, it left a cone-shaped hole in the community. Luckily Luther’s Scoops is here to patch it back up. Founder and pastry chef Christian Williams – who previously worked at Michelin-starred restaurants such as Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck, Loam in Ireland and Werneckhof in Munich – and his team recently took over the space to open its second store.
Luther’s small selection changes regularly, but past highlights include a tart blackberry number with swirls of sour cream; a vegan mix of mango and coconut yoghurt; a delicate citrusy sorbet with nectarines and orange blossom; and the best-selling butterscotch ripple made with house-made butterscotch sauce and a healthy dash of salt.
Billy Van Creamy
142 Bridport Street, Albert Park
Known for its relationships with local suppliers and sustainable business practices, Billy Van Creamy has come a long way since brothers Mitch and Alex Wells started the business as a Northcote ice-cream truck in 2014. The ice-creamery’s fourth store recently opened on Albert Park’s busy Bridport Street, just up from Bread Club and Wally’s.
The focus is on familiar flavours – like choc mint, honeycomb and cookies and cream – done exceptionally well. Dairy scoops are made using organic milk and the team makes components in-house including nut butters, biscuits and jams. The team is also committed to sustainability and uses metal spoons for samples and reusable cups if you dine in, and even lets people use BYO-containers for takeaway ice-cream.
