Tochi Deli
THE LATEST
Tochi Deli is sticking around a little longer, with the demolition of Brunswick Market now delayed. The much-loved market stall’s last day of trade will be July 27. That gives regulars, and those who’ve yet to try Tochi, a few more weeks to grab its signature nigiri, onigiri and donburi with toppings including agedashi tofu, teriyaki chicken and saikyo-miso salmon.
As for what’s next? The couple are still figuring it out. “We are still looking and don’t know yet about the new location,” co-owner Shingo Tochimoto tells Broadsheet.
Inside Brunswick Market, you’ll find Tochi Deli, a real-deal Japanese stall by a friendly couple with more than 20 years of hospo experience between them.
Shingo and Rena Tochimoto had a simple vision: to offer traditional, affordable Japanese food in an approachable setting.
The menu revolves around what’s available, but seafood reigns. Nigiri options include scallops (marinated in yuzu peel), tuna belly, King George whiting, kingfish and salmon. You’ll also find plump mushroom and miso-salmon onigiri (Japanese rice balls) and several kinds of sushi rolls, including salmon tartare, miso eggplant and teriyaki mushroom.
More substantial are the donburi, or rice bowls, with toppings such as agedashi tofu, garlicky teriyaki chicken, and saikyo-miso salmon. There’s also a winter-perfect curry udon, which starts out with a stock made with kombu and shiitake mushrooms.
