Farmers’ markets are a great way to meet the people who produce our food, and soon the people of Alphington will have that chance.
Darebin Council has signed off $50,000 to get a market off the ground at Melbourne Innovation Centre, between Alphington station and Darebin Parklands.
The idea of a communal farmers’ market was floated in a Council report in 2014. As reported in the Leader, the report emphasized speeding up “the diffusion of a local food growing culture.”

SIGN UPThe new market is not the only one in the area, joining the existing Fairfield Farmers Market, which is held on the third Saturday of each month at Fairfield Primary School.
Not-for-profit enterprise Melbourne Farmer’s Markets will help the council develop a business plan to ensure the success of the new communal market.
The opening date for the market has not yet been confirmed.
