The nominations for the 78th Tony Awards were announced overnight, and our homegrown production of The Picture of Dorian Gray has received a whopping six nominations.
The play premiered in Sydney in 2020 and had an extensive Australian tour starring the lauded Sydney actress Eryn Jean Norvill. In 2023 the play was taken to the West End, and then Broadway, where all 26 characters originally played by Norvill were played by Adelaide-born Succession star Sarah Snook.
Snook was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role of a Play. She previously won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Actress for her performance in the play’s West End run.
Former Sydney Theatre Company artistic director Kip Williams was nominated for Best Direction of a Play. The production was the first of Williams’s “cine-theatre” trilogy, which blends stage performance with live projection from on-stage camera operators and some pre-recorded performances. The trilogy also included STC’s recent productions of Dracula and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
Marg Horwell and David Bergman received nods for Best Scenic Design of a Play. Horwell also received a nomination for Best Costume Design of a Play (and previously won an Olivier Award for Best Costume Design for the London production). Nick Schlieper and Clemence Williams were nominated for best lighting and best sound design respectively.
Kip and Clemence Williams, Horwell, Bergman and Schlieper have all been attached to the production since its Australian run.
This is the most nominations a solo show has ever received in the 78-year history of the Tony Awards.
Tickets are available for the Broadway production of The Picture of Dorian Gray.
The winners will be announced at Radio City Music Hall on Sunday June 8, 2025, at the 78th Annual Tony Awards.
