Barry’s Bootcamp, the famous American fitness studio, is coming to Melbourne.

Following launches in Sydney's CBD and Surry Hills last year, Melbourne will be graced with two studios in a few months' time.

Founded in 1998 in West Hollywood, Los Angeles, the now-global phenomenon offers a 55-minute high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workout inside a “red room”. Gym-goers work through a combination of treadmill routines and floor exercises using weights and resistance bands. The high-energy environment features mood lighting and music you’d expect to find in a nightclub.

“[While] all studios will include the essential elements that are known to our clients, each of them will have local adaptations,” Barry's head of Australian operations, Heston Russell, tells Broadsheet. “We're bringing what people love about Barry’s and building it into the local fabric.”

Both new studios, which open in the CBD and South Yarra later this year, will feature Barry’s signature program, targetting a different muscle group each day of the week – starting with arms and abs on Monday; butt and legs on Tuesday; chest, back and abs on Wednesday; core on Thursday; and a full-body routine over the weekend to finish.

“I’ve been in the military for 15 years. I have to train myself to the top level of fitness. Throughout my life, until I started with Barry’s, I never really found that one-stop workout that can achieve the aesthetic result and the cardio and fitness result [I want] at the same time,” says Russell.

Russell says Barry's devotees range from Russell’s 60-year-old mother (who likes to walk at an incline on the treadmill), to former Olympians with rigorous training routines, to celebrities including Kim Kardashian, David Beckham, Harry Styles and Jessica Alba.

Each studio is home to a Barry’s Fuel Bar, an on-site shake and smoothie counter with menu items created in collaboration with local nutritionists. Russell’s personal favourite is the Barry’s & Brunch, a vanilla smoothie with gluten-free granola, blueberries, bananas, protein powder, almond butter and almond milk.

Barry’s Boot Camp is due to open in Melbourne's CBD and South Yarra in mid to late 2019. This article was updated to reflect the confirmed location of the new studios on May 3, 2019.
