African Music and Cultural Festival 2023
The African Music and Culture Festival is returning for its 10th year with a three-day celebration of music, food, fashion, film, dance and art at Fed Square. Showcasing the rich and diverse cultures of over 35 African countries, the program is bigger than before.
Day one will host an outdoor cinema experience, screening African Australian short films alongside spoken word performances and live jazz music. On Saturday – the festival’s main event – enjoy 12 hours of non-stop live entertainment, stalls selling African wares, free drumming lessons, face painting, African board games and more. Standout performances include Northcote dance school Mzuri Dance, South Sudanese-born Aussie musician Slate Nation, Kofi Kunkpe Music and reggae artist Disun Future.
There’ll also be engaging panel talks where you can learn about current African-Australian issues as well as history across the continent and other interesting facts.
To fuel you through it all, plenty of African street food stalls and trucks will be on hand. Try Ethiopian cuisine by Foostracy eatery Konjo Mama, Afro-Caribbean fusion bites at The Yard, traditional food from Tastes of Senegal and fresh juice at Saccha Sugarcane Bar, just to mention a few.
