The Birds at Malthouse Theatre
Best known for inspiring Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 film of the same name, The Birds was originally a short story penned by English novelist Daphne du Maurier (Rebecca, My Cousin Rachel). Now the tale is being brought to life on stage at Malthouse Theatre as a one-woman show starring Paula Arundell in the leading role.
Directed by Malthouse Theatre’s former artistic director Matthew Lutton (Picnic at Hanging Rock) and adapted by Louise Fox, The Birds tells the story of a supernatural bird attack on a coastal town. Equipped with headphones for an immersive sound experience, audience members can expect an adrenaline-fuelled journey of survival, paranoia and primal instincts.
Renowned for her Helpmann Award-nominated performance as Hermione in the stage adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child – as well as performances in Three Furies, Antony & Cleopatra and Henry V – Arundell brings a powerful, emotional performance to this chilling role.
The Birds opens on May 16 and runs until June 7 at the Malthouse’s Beckett Theatre. Find out more and get your tickets here.
