What’s old is new again at Bowden’s Plant 4. After being vacant for six years, the former Clipsal factory is back in action thanks to the Ceres Market Shed Group (which owns and operates The Market Shed on Holland).
Remnants of its past remain, such as the saw-tooth roof and exposed brick walls, but electrical goods have made way for specialty eateries, bi-weekly market stalls and more.
The 2818-square-metre industrial warehouse has undergone an extensive green retrofit with help from Renewal SA. Now operating under a 5 Green Star rating, the multi-purpose offering features permanent fixtures such as The Lost Loaf, the new venture from former Magill Estate pastry chef Emma Shearer; Market Shed regular The Travelling Greek; and cured-meat experts San José Smallgoods.
Cafe and coffee roastery Beach Organics will operate five to six days per week, with produce sourced from owner-operator Barry Beach’s NASAA-certified organic farm in Port Elliot. The store is also stocked with items such as cinnamon quills from Sumatra, honey from Borneo and cacao from Southeast Asia.
During the week, the ground level doubles as a co-working space with hot-desking and NBN available. On Wednesdays and Saturdays the desks make way for a produce and makers’ market. The focus is on small-batch producers and organic and sustainable food. “We’re not calling ourselves an organic market … it’s not a requirement. But most people here have a focus on local, organic ingredients,” says co-owner Jono Kaitatzis. “Everyone is conscious about what they’re doing.”
Like the Market Shed, many of the stalls revolve around vegan and raw produce; think smoothie bowls, raw vegan cakes and veggie burgers. There’s also pies, paella, okonomiyaki (Japanese savoury pancakes) and wood-oven pizza.
