Scent is an extraordinary thing. It’s what breathes warmth into bygone memories, giving us fuzzy feelings of nostalgia. But it’s also a form of self-representation – and that’s why the search for a new signature fragrance can be a long one. It’s all about honing your taste and tapping into what works with your individual chemistry.
Aesop is the Melbourne-born label that just gets scent. If you’ve ever walked past one of its architect-designed flagship stores – or sampled one of its famed, rich-smelling creams – you’ll know it’s true. The cult brand continues to expand its fragrance collection, with the latest addition reminiscent of the sundrenched vistas of Mediterranean days gone by.
Who: Aesop
What: Virere Eau de Parfum
When: For morning, evening and everywhere in between
Where: Wrists, neck and decolletage, spritzed lightly onto skin
Why: Drawing inspiration from treasured memories of basking in the Mediterranean sun, long-term Aesop collaborator Barnabe Fillion has successfully put summer in a bottle. It’s rituals like cycling through fragrant orchards, taking shade beneath a fig tree and brewing your first morning green tea that come together for a bouquet you’ll keep coming back to.
How: With an aromatic profile designed to develop as the day goes on, Virere Eau de Parfum features top notes of bergamot, galbanum and petitgrain; middle notes of green tea, mastic and pink pepper; and base notes of cedar, green maté and hay. But if we were to put the scent into three words, it’d be citrus, green and woody – and the result is fresh, herbaceous and warm.
