Macedon’s Mount Monument Winery is the long-time love of architect Nonda Katsalidis, who’s been working on the estate (once his holiday home) with partner Jane Collins since 2004. The work has paid off, and it’s now one of the region's essential drinking and dining destinations.

Nonda’s a big name in the architecture scene. He’s behind the industrial design of Pharos at MONA in Tasmania and Eureka Tower in Melbourne. The collection of sculptures at Mount Monument tells the story of Katsalidis’ relationship with other artists and designers.

Ranging in size and style, you’ll find works from Louise Paramor, Richard Stringer, Lisa Roet and Nonda himself. Beyond sculpture, a canvas commission by James Clayden (long-time friend of Nonda) hangs in the cellar door, using house paint to capture the Macedon landscape.

The four-course shared menu leverages hyper-local produce, starting light with Riesling mignonette oysters and pesto mushrooms, before building to a Wagyu main with capers and truffle aoili, plus an everchanging Plat du Jour. Or, head to the cellar door for grazing plates like house arancini; burrata with roasted grapes; and a selection of cheeses, terrine and charcuterie.

The small-scale vineyard grows Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Riesling and outsources grapes from Heathcote to produce Greco, Grenache Rose, Sangiovese and Shiraz.

There are tastings available at the bar, low table and outdoor seating, plus the option for group bookings in a hidden cellar door, which has expansive views of the grounds. The experience is slow and mindful – servers will talk you through each of the estate wines, from the influence of terroir to the flavour profile of vintages.
