Chances are that you've already seen the work of Megan Todd. Her chunky knitted clutches for her label Knots and Knits have been doing the rounds lately, appearing in the pages of glossy magazines and in the posts of both local and international bloggers. If Australia had an 'it' bag of the season, the neon-popping Moon Glow Clutch would be it.

"The response has been overwhelming," urges Todd. So overwhelming, in fact, that the young start-up designer based in Brisbane has just quit her day job to keep up with the orders. "I think people are drawn to the bags due to the pop of colour and texture. And also, the customer is such a broad market, from trendy girls in their mid teens and twenties, to mums and older women who appreciate good quality, handmade products."

With a strong background in knitting, Todd cut her teeth working for innovative knitwear designer James Long in London before returning home to start her label. Her approach is hands-on and her designs work to push the boundaries of knitwear. Todd can spend up to five hours knitting and purling just to make one of her bags. Her chunky statement accessories are created using oversized needles and cotton cord roping. It's an unexpected material but the overall outcome is both aesthetically striking and durable.

For her collaboration with Molten Store, an online boutique beloved for its curious collection of accessories, Todd has given her designs a fresh twist by teaming her signature neons with neutral tones, silver and bronze. The result is raw and summer ready, with macramé necklaces and handmade tassels also added to the mix.

While her new designs are already receiving praise, Todd is looking forward to the next project, knitting needles in hand. "I would love to expand into clothing and more things. I would love to do men’s accessories one day!"

But for now, she's content with focusing on her ever-popular knitted bags. "There is still so much more I haven't even explored yet with bags," she says.
