The Fifty Six, a sophisticated Chinese restaurant from chef Gerald Ong, sits on the top floor of the heritage-listed Naldham House.
The venue takes its name from Queensland’s first Chinese migrants – a group of 56 labourers who arrived in Brisbane in 1848. Ong, whose resume includes Chairman & Yip (the Canberra outpost of Hong Kong’s Chairman restaurant) as well as Sydney restaurants Porteño and Automata, honours the history of Chinese immigration to Brisbane through his menu.
There’s Moreton Bay bug pao fan in a in superior broth – made from seafood, chicken, pork and mushrooms – poured tableside. Plus, a concise but considered dim sum menu, featuring stars like the prawn har gow.
For dessert, you might go for deep-fried toffee ice-cream served with fresh cream and char siu caramel sauce.
