Occupying an iconic corner in Adelaide’s East End, Exchange Coffee has long been at the front of the pack in the city’s specialty coffee scene.
Since 2013, Melbourne’s Market Lane Coffee has supplied Exchange with its seasonal house blends and single origins. Long, clean espressos and bright, fruity batch brewed coffee are the venue’s defining offerings. But it’s also where you can also try coffee made using a Tricolate – a filter device which is said to achieve a higher extraction and results in a greater balance, sweetness and clarity.
Exchange’s menu skirts around brunch classics in favour of produce-driven dishes. Think chive waffles with beetroot-cured salmon, poached eggs and whipped ricotta; and baked eggs with red lentil dal, tomato salsa, mint yoghurt and pappadums. Then there’s the signature Wallace sandwich with avocado, Barossa pancetta, chipotle mayo, roasted peppers and mojo verde – and its vego and vegan cousins, the Walloumi and the Wegan.
The site was once part of the Adelaide Fruit and Produce Exchange – a sprawling four-acre market that traded from 1904 until 1988. Now repurposed and redeveloped, the area boasts a handful of cafes and niche retailers, with Exchange among the best of them.
