Sam Crowl and his father John of Enmore Road’s much-loved gelataria, Cow & The Moon, flew over to Rimini, Italy last week to compete in the Gelato World Tour, which draws artisan gelato entrants from all over the world. This morning at around 7.30am Eastern Standard Time, the duo found out that they had won.

The team entered 300 litres of their flavour, Mandorla Affogato, into the competition. Kenyan single-origin espresso was swirled into salted caramel sauce, roasted into Italian-sourced caramelised almonds and finally, mixed through Madagascan vanilla bean gelato, and was voted as the best in the competition (and indeed the world), beating out Italian gelato makers Francesco Mastroianni of Il Cantagalli, and Alessandro Lancierini of Gelateria Fiore, who came second and third place respectively.

Co-owner Mary Crowl, who’s at home manning the gelateria while her husband and son are in Italy, is thrilled for the business. “It was tough for us because we don’t speak Italian, and so asking people to vote for us was a little harder, as a lot of the other internationals competing spoke the language,” she says. Though it seems ice cream speaks louder than words. “John has been teaching Italians how to make gelato for years,” says Mary, and after this news, they’ll be coming by in droves.
