The lower end of Reservoir Street in Surry Hills is a lively thoroughfare from Monday to Friday, where choices of coffee and lunch for those creative types working in offices upstairs are bountiful. Many criss-cross the street for some of the city’s best sandwiches, salads and espresso. Over recent months, a glass-fronted space on the corner of Mary and Reservoir Streets has been under construction, stirring general speculation and excitement as to what new venture would be brought to the Reservoir fold. The Reservoir opened last week, offering up a fresh set of possibilities for the local crowd.

The menu at The Reservoir follows a fairly broad Mediterranean theme, blending influence, ingredients and flavours from Morocco, Greece and Egypt. To keep all things effortless and uncomplicated, choices are divided into garden, farm and ocean. Choose from seven staple dishes fixed in one of three ways – poached eggs for breakfast served with either spinach and aubergine caviar, pancetta confit garlic puree, or salted cod and smashed peas topped with squid ink. At lunch there is paella with your choice of courgette and artichoke, speck and chicken, or prawn, mussels and squid.

Coffee at The Reservoir brings a different flavour to this Surry Hills coffee quarter with beans from the Blue Mountains’ Umami coffee roasters. Owner Mario Sarris has kept the space open, raw and neat – exposed brick is matched with elements of black and walnut-brown. Sarris assures us there is more to be unveiled at The Reservoir – a liquor license and dinner menu to come, as well as evening magic shows exhibiting the talent of waiter slash magician Ryle Hilton (also known as The Great Hiltini), who has an especially extraordinary talent for bending forks.
