Leave your Great Danes at the door, this is an event for the little guys.

Calling all (small) pooches: Thornbury is getting its first Tiny Dog Festival this Saturday. Bring your pugs, chihuahuas, papillons, French bulldogs and other petite canines – as long as they weigh less than 10 kilos, they're considered a tiny dog.

From 12pm to 10pm, there's a line-up of competitions and activities. At 2pm, Melbourne's tiniest dog will be crowned, then its best-dressed at 3.30pm, and finally, fastest, when the city's first annual tiny dog race happens at 4pm.

There'll also be a mini dog market with fashion accessories such as bow ties, bandanas, hats and collars; dog-training sessions; and a photo booth to capture all the magic.

You can donate to Pets of the Homeless – a Melbourne-based charity dedicated to supporting dogs with owners who are sleeping rough or in difficult circumstances – at their stand on the day. Or if your home is feeling a little empty, Greyhound Rescue Victoria representatives will be there to give tips on adopting a not-so-tiny dog.

Food trucks by Mr Burger, Nem N’ Nem Vietnamese, and Donald and Tuck, among others, will ensure humans are well fed. And the bar will be serving beer, and a bone-based drink for dogs.
