Despite an abundance of cafes, patisseries and French restaurants, Toorak is one area that seems to have missed out on a really serious coffee destination. New kid on the block, Townhouse is looking to change that.

Set within the confines of an old townhouse with a feature wall that replicates the Tudor theme of the area, Townhouse is the second venture of Prospect Espresso’s Matt Ward and Mitchell Haworth. Joining the partnership is head chef Will Manning (Prospect Espresso, The Botanical and Verge) and together the trio has created a refreshing Toorak Road hotspot, which rivals its neighbours.

“We wanted to bring coffee to Toorak and we saw that there was a bit of a spot in the market to fill,” says Ward.

Unlike the surrounding coffee shops which opt to pump out dark Italian style roast coffee, the team at Townhouse are serving up a lighter house blend from Rosso, although they have a rotating blend and single origin from roasters like Proud Mary, Maling Room and Seven Seeds.

“It’s different to a lot of the coffee that’s here but I think we are bringing it across well, most people are enjoying it” says Ward.

“We have a different blend on rotation every couple of days. We rotate our blend as we want to have the freedom to showcase the best coffee that Melbourne has to offer at that particular time.”

It’s not just the coffee; the food has also been well received. The smoked salmon and avocado on dark rye is a particular favourite and there are also options such as muesli with green apple and cinnamon yoghurt and a bacon, tomato, avocado and herb mayo breakfast bun. For something more substantial, you might like to try the chicken breast salad with potato gnocchi, smoked marrow, peas and asparagus.
