For co-owners Matt Ward and Mitch Haworth, Prospect Espresso is all about consistent coffee and sourcing ethical produce- simple. They want the perfect match between good coffee and good food.

The first business venture for the duo is located in amongst the shop fronts of Camberwell, with a facade that’s simple and understated. Setting up in a small space hasn’t been a problem for Ward and Haworth, who worked closely with architects to create an interior that feels bigger than it actually is.

Exposed light bulbs hang from the black ceiling and the large front window bathes patrons in light, as they perch on stools at the bench looking out onto the street. The interior is simple, with exposed brick and wooden walls, polished floors and splashes of bright yellow – a colourful addition to otherwise neutral surroundings.

Sitting at the large wooden communal table will give you the perfect view of Ward and Haworth creating some magic behind the Mistral coffee machine. Serving coffee by Rosso and a number of single origin varieties, both of the lads have extensive experience in the coffee department, having played the coffee making game at the likes of Coin Laundry, Rouge and Espresso 3121.

Head chef Will Manning hails from a fine dining background and has created a menu with a slight English twist. Think black pudding, mouth-watering ricotta hot cakes and a hearty breakfast roll, all presented with a certain finesse. Bread is from Bakery Lievito and spreads are from Jam Lady. Add to this a hearty lunch menu and some tasty treats from Red Door cakes and you know you will leave satisfied.

Already buzzing, Prospect Espresso has been a welcome addition to Camberwell’s expanding cafe scene.
