On the ground floor of the Asada building in Aoyama, you will find a small but engaging space that smells faintly of Japanese ceder. This is Aesop’s first signature store in Tokyo.
The Australian brand has succeeded once again in creating an immediately recognisable and unique product in a new place. From the simple yet striking brown white and black packaging to the distinctive botanical scent that wafts from your hands after using their products - their attention to detail is impeccable.
Their stores are no exception. Each store is regarded at a showcase for their sought after products. For Aoyama, renowned architect Jo Nagasaka worked with Aesop Director Dennis Paphitis on a design that was functional yet met Aesop’s poetic aspirations. They used wood from an abandoned house in Tokyo to create a design that fuses old and new materials, and the floor and benches are coated with epoxy to create a fluid, water-like appearance.
The highly anticipated store opened last week, incorporating old and new materials to pay homage to Japanese tradition of fusing modern and traditional techniques, while imbuing it with the warm Aesop aesthetic.
