Trust a bar owned by indie rock stars to make you feel welcome the moment you walk in the door. A seedy buzz is always in the air as you stride past the Death Valley Bar and Records’ three pinball machines, and a grungy tune is often playing as you settle upon a counter-side stool.

Once you have a morning mimosa or an afternoon cider in hand, you won't want to leave the stretch of Wynnum Road that Patience Hodgson and John Patterson – aka indie band The Grates – call home. The duo also owns Southside Tea Room, the quirky cafe next door.

While SSTR is focussed on daytime eating and drinking, this seedier sibling is all about evening and weekend fun. Of course, that means nursing a brew from one of ten specialty taps, talking to your mates and whiling away the time. In other words, doing what all good dive bars are known for.

Not content with two bustling spaces, the duo added a third in the form of Death Valley's beer garden. Heading out back, customers will find all the street food courtesy of the permanently stationed Red Robin Supper Truck; the menu is always changing, but it remains consistently brilliant.
