She Loves You
At She Loves You the pace is a little slower than at other venues in Newtown, which makes it a casual, comfortable and welcoming neighbourhood bar.
The brains behind it are Sophie Otton, her partner Stephen Smooker and Martin Corcoran of Adelaide’s excellent Peel St restaurant.
There’s a growing collection of antique bottles on display, and a soundtrack that includes country, big band and blues.
The wines at She Loves you have been carefully hand-picked by Otton, who is the sommelier at Billy Kwong as well as a wine consultant, educator and writer. Her CV includes wine director for Rockpool Bar & Grill, two-time finalist in the Vin de Champagne Awards (one of Australia's most coveted wine awards) and judge and certified sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers.
The wines are easy to drink and affordable, such as a refreshing and citrusy riesling by Frederick Stevenson from the Clare Valley, and a savoury nebbiolo refrosco by Little Reddie.
Each cocktail incorporates house-made ingredients, such as the rhubarb syrup used in the rhubarb Kewpie Doll (along with gin, lemon juice and Suze Gentian liqueur, a bitter French aperitif made from the gentian root). And the cayenne orgeat (a barley-almond syrup) for the Snow White (which features dark rum, chilli, lime and pineapple juice). If neither wine nor cocktails take your fancy, there’s a small but killer whisky selection, with some rare and hard-to-get bottles.
