Legendary musician, author and poet Patti Smith has just announced dates for her 2020 Australian tour. The punk icon will play two shows each in Sydney (at the Enmore Theatre) and Melbourne (at The Forum) with her backing group Her Band, which includes her son Jackson Smith. She’s also one of the headline acts at Byron Bay Bluesfest.

Smith’s latest book, Year of the Monkey, was released last month. It follows on from her 2010 memoir Just Kids, which detailed her early career and relationship with photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, and her 2015 book M Train, which chronicles her career after the release of her groundbreaking 1975 debut album Horses. Year of the Monkey chronicles a recent year Smith spent on the road – the memoir melds dreams and reality to convey her mixed emotions about turning 70.

Smith was last in Australia in 2017, when she played a sold-out series of shows.

“I really didn’t expect to be coming back, but it was just such a great trip,” said Smith in a statement. “I really thought that I wouldn’t be able to come back – so I’m delighted that I was wrong.”
