The jury’s still a bit out on glamping. To some, it goes against the idea of camping. To others, it’s a great way to get out into the wild with a few luxe mod-cons. But as you wake to the tranquil sound of birdsong inside Big4 Riverside’s fancy, fairy-lit tent on the banks of the Murray River – rejuvenated and ready for the day ahead – you too may believe the hype.

Set in Swan Hill within casting distance of the water, this spacious tent is essentially a small, canvas home. It’s a borderline pavilion equipped with a four-poster bed and a bunk to sleep a maximum of four, plus it comes with its own private bathroom. An outdoor dining space on your own timber porch affords views of the parkland, but you can take dinner inside beneath the fairy lights.

When the digs are this fancy, it’s no surprise you’ll have unfettered access to the park’s generous facilities – a swimming pool; a games room with foosball, pool and arcade games; and a cafe for your morning espresso, to name just a few. The tent’s hammock is hard to beat, though.

While there’s a kitchenette and barbecue provided for home cook-ups, you’re in prime position to hop between the cafes, restaurants and watering holes of the Swan Hill CBD. That, and the Pioneer Settlement and Heartbeat of the Murray, both an easy walk from your zippered canvas door.
