Clancy Sonter-Kelso has worked in hospitality for six years and always wanted to run his own cafe. Oliver Burscough is the director at Woodsters Furniture & Carpentry and has helped many Brisbane venues create stunning fit-outs.

Together, they decided to open Clancy’s Espresso. “Ollie doesn’t really have the hospitality aspect, but I had that covered,” Sonter-Kelso says. “And I don’t have the shop fit-out aspect, but he had that covered. So we decided to enter into a partnership.”

A Norman Park resident himself, Sonter-Kelso noticed there was a niche in the market for something like Clancy’s Espresso. “Around this area there are plenty of shops and good cafes, but none of them have the atmosphere and vibe that I’m looking for,” he says.

So he found a dingy, triangle-shaped supplements store that was up for lease and put Burscough’s expertise to work. Together, they completely gutted the shop and gave the exterior and interior a fresh paint-job. Burscough implemented a minimalist black-and-white colour scheme, retaining plenty of timber elements and adding a whole lot of greenery.

Since opening last week, Clancy’s Espresso has been offering coffee from Single O and pastries from Jocelyn’s Provisions. Next week, the cafe will begin serving a selection of wraps and bagels, including a Reuben with pastrami, sauerkraut, pickles, mustard, Swiss cheese and aioli. Then, once Sonter-Kelso and Burscough are comfortable, a full breakfast menu will come on-stream.
