The north of the river outpost of Prahran’s Market Lane Coffee borders the Queen Victoria market in a small, bright, double-fronted cafe that can be identified by its distinct window signature: “We love to make coffee for the city that loves to drink it.”

Just opposite the organic fruit and veg section is the light, open and clean space. The white-painted brick interior has banquette seating against the walls and front window, a couple of higher stools against one wall and a T-shaped coffee and tea station as the centrepiece.

There are no tables, but you don’t need them. After all, you are only here for coffee. With two baristas either side of the T, they’re serving coffee (no soy or skinny milk), pour over, espresso beverages and a small selection of pastries and cakes.

Like the other stores, the Prahran flagship, inside the Queen Vic Deli and on Faraday Street, there is a focus on retail and the staff is dedicated to teaching their customers about coffee and how to brew it at home. On display is a range of single-estate beans, as well as brewing equipment and other coffee accoutrements.
