At the rate food trucks are appearing on our streets, you’d think it was practically a faux pas to eat a taco or a burger inside these days. Casey Norman and Amy Roberts’ new restaurant on wheels, Trailer Made, is jumping on the bandwagon in some sense, but definitely doing things differently.
Instead of your standard dude food line-up, Trailer Made is cooking up some delicate Pan-European fare inspired by the pair’s recent trip to Germany, Turkey and Greece. Think spiced chickpeas, Israeli chicken with giant cous cous, latkes on a fresh salad, and a pomegranate and rose iced tea. “We wanted to move away from what everyone else was doing – that typical, side-of-the-road, fried-up stuff. It’s good quality, but it’s certainly not what we like to eat,” explains Roberts. “We didn’t want to brand ourselves with a certain type of food. We left it quite open so we could be flexible with the menu.”
The standout from the former Cumulus chef is a beef bun that could have reached Little Bourke via Istanbul (and Adelaide): “It’s actually like a Chinese steamed bun that Casey makes from scratch, and then she fills it with a braised beef that’s been done in Coopers Pale Ale and Chinese wine,” says Roberts. “She serves it up with a slaw and homemade chilli. A lot of customers have said they’re coming back just for the chilli.”

SIGN UPApart from cruising the inner north, Trailer Made will be making its way to music festivals, events like Spring Fashion Week, even making its way around country Victoria. Roberts says the travelling is part of a food truck’s appeal. “We’re pretty excited to pick up gigs wherever we can, and have the opportunity to meet new people – and feed new people.”
