Empire Highgate is known for both on-trend pieces and timeless investments. After visiting neighbouring Mary Street Bakery or Must Winebar, it’s hard to resist a stroll through the photogenic store.

The chain is owned by Jill and Perry Coleman, and run by their daughter, Elissa Coleman. The very first store Old Empire opened back in the late ’80s. Eventually the “Old” was dropped, along with the traditional antiques, but the Colemans’ “something old, something new” policy remains, encouraging customers to avoid the decorating norm.

While it’s had many a storefront in a list of locations, Empire Highgate stands as the oldest of the six currently in Perth and surrounds. Geared toward inner-city living, the warehouse’s vibe caters to those in the urban area. So much so, dogs are welcome.

Split in two levels, the first is an artfully arranged space of plush textures, ornamental accessories and offerings from Missoni Home, Marimekko, Slim Aarons and more.

Upstairs you’ll find a burst of natural light and a large range of Empire’s own brand – the Scandinavian-inspired light-wash pieces are Highgate staples. Custom orders are available, but floor stock is ripe for the picking and makes every visit a unique one.
