When Alpha Restaurant opened in the old Hellenic Club in Sydney’s CBD, a food store offering Greek street favourites was always part of the plan. It is a modern take on the marketplaces of Greece, where traditional products imported straight from the homeland are sold as take-home treats. The Alpha Food Store offers premium, authentic products imported directly from family-run estates in Greece.

A selection of street-style food – such as savoury pies of spanakopita, or chicken, mushroom and saffron – can be purchased over the counter as a hot, ready-to-eat takeaway, or to be baked at home. Greek specialties sit behind the glass counter; traditional rizogalo (Greek rice pudding), baklava and a variety of cakes and muffins to accompany a freshly brewed Greek coffee or your daily flat white courtesy of Will & Co.

Alpha has also created a retail section where it offers a line of olive oils, preserves, honey, olives, sauces and candies, and a variety of other items for use at home. Brands available include Dionysus oils, which are used by chef Peter Conistis in the restaurant.

The team at Alpha is also preparing to offer a range of hampers just in time for the holidays. These will vary in size and hold a selection of Alpha’s choice goodies, which could include olive oils, dried pastas, honey, sea salts, Greek sweets and vinegars. The idea will be to have a complete offering; olive oil, savoury, salts and something sweet.
