When was the last time going to the movies felt like an adventure? SBS World Movies Secret Cinema aims to inject the thrill of spontaneity back into your film-going experience – you buy a ticket not knowing which film you'll be seeing or where you'll be seeing it, with attendees receiving a text message on the day with instructions on where to meet.

At the sold-out inaugural event last year, the lucky ones who snagged a ticket ended up seeing the acclaimed Iranian film Circumstance at The Standard in Darlinghurst, which was decked out in spectacular Persian-themed decorations for the occasion.

Clues released so far for this year’s instalment are that the “controversial” film in question “caused outrage in the U.S.”, “inspired blockbusters” and launched the career of…our guess is as good as yours.

Chris Keely, general manager of SBS subscription TV, says the event perfectly captures the spirit of World Movies, being unpredictable, diverse and unique. Sessions in Melbourne and Brisbane are also planned for early 2013.

Promising to be more elaborate than the last year in every way, it sounds like one to mark down in your calendar, even if the details remain a tantalising question mark. Tickets are $30 and include a drink, food and who knows what else.

The SBS World Movies Secret Cinema takes place on Sunday October 21. Tickets go on sale Monday October 8 at 9am.
