The name says it all. Ascend the steps up a short but steep hill overlooking the port of Strahan to enjoy a pre-dinner drink from the best vantage point in town. If the deck gets a bit chilly, the inside bar is warm and spacious, with unimpeded views. There’s also a library for those who’d rather gaze into a book than out the window.

There’s a wide selection of Tasmanian beer and wine available, but View 42°’s speciality is Hellyers Road whisky tastings. The distillery is located in the state’s north, in prime dairy farming country. It’s a tourist attraction in its own right, attracting 25,000 visitors a year.

The tasting offers four single malts: the original seven-year-old, a 10-year-old, a pinot finish and a peated. The whisky tasting is essentially a self-guided tour, but the bar staff will happily answer any questions and give advice.

To accompany the tasting, View 42° serves a wide variety of bar food, including wallaby salami, fig and walnut paste, Cape Grim brie and the region’s famous smoked salmon.
