Petal Met Sugar is a tiny cafe combining fresh flowers and artful sweets by florist Angela Wong and patissier Elsa Li.

The women were creating sweets and flowers for events. Then halfway through 2014 they decided it was time for a dedicated space, and after some looking around the ground floor of the new Luxe apartment and retail development came up. The space allows them to have a florist bench and a large – and very visible – adjoining kitchen, where their creative ideas come together.

“We wanted to have the open kitchen to let people watch Elsa work, tempering chocolate and making things,” says Wong. “She was nervous to be on display, but she’s just so good.” Li has previously worked at The Observatory, Adriano Zumbo and Merivale.

The simple, white-tiled cafe portion of the space is filled with a selection of flowers Wong brings in from the markets to make a kaleidoscope of bunches. Alongside the flowers sits the small selection of sweets by Li. There’s typically a choice of around five sweets. These might include the terrarium – a chocolate globe filled with passionfruit and finger-lime panna cotta, dusted with cacao nibs and edible flowers. Or a salted-caramel tart topped with caramelised popcorn, gold sea salt and those pretty flowers.
