The Light Brigade
Walk in and you’ll see a regular pub – sports screens, generic beers and carpet. Around the back, though, a stone staircase hints at something far grander.
Level two is Brigade Dining (formerly La Scala), a semi-formal bistro that shows off the ideas of the venue’s executive chef, ex-Rockpool man Marco Adler. A wood-fired oven roasts pumpkin and carrots with walnuts, almond and maple, and the inventive mains include pancetta-wrapped monkfish with parsnip puree and savoy cabbage.
On top of that is Brigade Lounge, an Art Deco–style lounge with cocktails, share plates and some impressive views of the Sydney skyline. Architects SJB used The Light Brigade’s Art Deco origins to inspire a new space here with arched room partitions, deep blue walls and slouching leather furniture.
Even more impressive are the views on the last level, the venue’s backyard-inspired rooftop bar, which looks like a garden-magazine patio.
The food is different on every floor. While Brigade Dining offers the most forward-thinking menu, the lounge serves snacks such as Thai-style betel-leaf wraps to match the cocktail list. The two remaining levels are more relaxed, with pub classics and pizzas from the wood-fired oven, the latter being the only menu item available on every floor.
