This cosy fisherman’s cottage is perched on the edge of Pittwater and backed by Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. It’s only accessible by ferry or water taxi – that should give you a clue about its secluded offering.

Wake up to sunrise over Pittwater at The Little Black Shack , a restored timber and sandstone cottage on Sydney’s northern beaches. To access the Mackerel Beach stay, board Myra (the vintage Palm Beach ferry) with everything you need for a weekend hidden away – there are no shops or roads once you arrive.

Two bedrooms – one king, one queen – feature panoramic views through picture windows. There’s a large north-facing deck to catch the sun and a covered outdoor sandstone kitchen, including a woodfired oven and charcoal barbeque. Guests have access to the seasonal garden and are encouraged to drop a fishing line and try their hand at catching dinner. There are also kayaks and snorkelling gear available to keep you busy. An outdoor shower adds to the escapist appeal of this rustic slice of paradise.
