Patonga is idyllic, serene and beautiful. This seaside Central Coast town south-west of Woy Woy is perfect for enjoying the simpler moments in life: swimming, sunbathing and hanging out at the pub. Now, once you’ve finished your beer, you can walk up a flight of stairs and relax on a luxurious king bed in one of the pub’s three new boutique apartments, all with balconies showcasing waterfront views.

The decades-old waterside Boathouse Patonga Hotel – formerly the Patonga Beach Hotel – was purchased by The Boathouse Group (Boathouse Palm Beach, Shelly Beach, Balmoral and Barrenjoey House) in 2017. It was closed for six months last year for maintenance, repairs and an update to its interiors, reopening in late 2018.

“Patonga’s location is unique in that you can get away from it all and enjoy a classic Australian coastal holiday, while still only being a 20-minute ferry ride from Palm Beach, or a 1.5-hour drive from Sydney,” said Andrew Goldsmith, the group’s co-founder, in a statement.

The group purchased the pub and its adjoining hotel to provide rooms for guests who attend weddings in their other venues, mostly in the Northern Beaches.

“Patonga is historically a fishing village and a few boats still go out every day. When they visit, people say it’s like stepping back in time to the 1950s. We want the hotel to capture Patonga’s sleepy coastal village spirit,” Goldsmith told Broadsheet last year.

Fishers still run boats from the inlet nearby, and that aspect of local history influenced the design of the rooms, which feature timber and terrazzo flooring, nautical fabrics, patterned lampshades and handmade shell mirrors. Think warm tones, dark navy hues, bright white walls and big windows with shutters.

There are three apartments: a one-bedroom, a two-bedroom and a three-bedroom. (The first two can also be interconnected.) Each accommodation features a balcony, living and dining areas, marble ensuite bathrooms, a washer and dryer, and either a kitchenette or full kitchen.

Off-season rates begin at $300 per night mid-week for the one-bedroom, and go up to $800 on weekends for the three-bedroom. Peak season rates go from $550 to $850 for the same options.
