Wild Cockatoo Bakery
It’s easy to miss Wild Cockatoo Bakery. It may sit on a major road, but it’s seemingly hidden in plain sight – so small there’s barely room to sit down amongst the sacks of flour.
Brimming from baskets at the counter, their excellent classic sourdough is always available, in addition to a variety of other breads, such as the soy and linseed or the nutty, thick crust of their wholemeal loaves. Otherwise, the options change daily. Look out for the ale and walnut, potato bread or the more recent flatbreads, studded with olives, tomatoes and herbs.
Fruit breads bear an almost obscene amount of fruit and rely more on plump sultanas or juicy apricots than the usual sprinkle of dried fruits. The pies and sausage rolls are flaky and golden and make for a great lunch option, but the Danishes and croissants tend to leave you wanting more.
There’s a sense of experimentation here, which makes every visit to Wild Cockatoo a bit like a generous lucky dip. The general sentiment seems to be that it’s pricy for the vicinity, but a bargain for the quality. And if you need evidence of that, just drop in at the end of an afternoon to see the shelves stripped bare. After all, this spot is too good to stay too hidden for too long.
