Like a book exchange but significantly tastier, The Vic Bottle-o’s swap ’n’ go growler program gives beer lovers the chance to drink a new brew every week, without wasting bottles.

The 1.89-litre glass vessels are almost equivalent to a six-pack, but they’re cheaper and more sustainable. You’ll only pay for your growler once, then you can return it on a weekly basis in exchange for a fresh refill. The brews and brands change each week, with a particular focus on local breweries such as Batch Brewing Co., Young Henrys and The Grifter Brewing Co.

The tiny shop sits inside The Vic on the Park. It’s the antithesis of homogenous, big-brand liquor shops, with no lock-in contracts controlling new stock. The staff is always open to listening to customers and ordering in new or recommended brands.

Known as the Marrickville Wine Shop until May 2016, the Vic Bottle-o was rebranded to reflect its broader focus. In addition to beers, a selection of premium spirits, organic and biodynamic wines still fills the shelves. Boutique wine remains an important aspect of the business, with regular tasting nights held throughout the year.
