There aren’t many stores that can truly inspire creative wonderment and childlike awe, but Seasonal Concepts manages to do it with ease. Stepping into the Redfern store is like venturing into a realm of the curiouser and curiouser.
There’s the towering wall of old glass jars, colourful pots and Australiana pottery. Then there’s the collection of taxidermy animals (proud roosters, laughing hyenas and top hat-wearing wolves). And then there’s ‘Roger’ – a gigantic stuffed giraffe who looms over the entire store with an endearing gaze that seems to follow you around. It’s hard not to get the feeling that Ken, the owner, has quite the sense of humour.
The film industry has known about this little gem for a while. Baz Luhrmann sourced props for his adaption of the roaring 20s classic The Great Gatsby, as have countless magazines and stylists. But you don’t have to be a film guru to borrow a few of the quirky, mainly Australian colonial, pieces – prop hire is available to all.
The store’s eclectic collection of antique homewares, jewellery and furniture – sourced from private collections, estate sales and auctions around the country – is bought to life with a beautiful array of fresh flowers, from lilies, orchards and roses to something a little more exotic, all of which are for sale as well.
