Potts Point Bookshop is well at home among the Parisian airs of Macleay Street in Elizabeth Bay. As you enter, there’s an arrangement of seasonal flowers on a huge table, piled with shiny new release titles. A small, lush garden herb garden grows just outside the front door (locals can help themselves to the ripe tomatoes when they’re in season).

And if the book recommendations here are anything to go by, you can tell there’s a broad and experienced readership on staff. The modest square metreage is decked out with an eclectic range of crime, literature and history books. There’s also a range of specialist titles covering art, fashion and design, to reflect local creatives’ tastes.

Owner Anna Low is also involved with the annual Kids Reading Guide, so there’s a great range for kids here, too. Every Friday morning is story time for little ones. The shop also runs not one but two dedicated book clubs – one for general reading, and the other just for crime buffs.
