Pies, lots of them, and in the kind of variety that makes your mouth water just reading the list. Sitting comfortably on the corner of Brown Street – with the raw brick walls, concrete floor and bright, fire engine red tin stools that mark the newer style of cafe – things are pretty straightforward here. There are salads and other bits and pieces on offer, but what you come here for are the pies.

Bangers and mash with a hefty crown of fluffy potato, slow-cooked shredded pork with apple and barbeque sauce, korma vegetable curry or spicy Cajun pork with corn and black beans are all perfect examples of how creative and distinctive a great pie can be, and they’re all baked on the premises.

Dessert is of the pie variety too, with whipped lime, Oreo, strawberry and cream or Mississippi mud among the favourites. You could easily have three courses of pie here and still be left dreaming about your next pie-centric meal. They’re licensed and stock craft beers including local brew Young Henrys, Dirty Granny cider, 4 Pines and Riverside. There’s even suggested pie and beer pairings.

Coffee is by Double Roasters, served expertly from the red La San Marco espresso machine. It’s a comfortably slick little operation, and it’s pretty clear that they know their pies.
