Marrickville Organic Market

Markets in Sydney seem to fall into two categories. There is the older, rambling, dusty types with gozleme and Rasta beanies mixed in with organic produce, and the newer, the more slick famers’ markets, where you can find single origin coffee and gourmet icy poles.

Marrickville Market sits somewhere in between. You can still find the vintage suitcases, alpaca wool tea cosies and a sausage sizzle, but cold-pressed smoothies with almond milk, cacao and kale, artisan bread and Pepe Saya butter have crept in over the years.

The snack stalls almost outnumber the produce stands, so come hungry and cash-laden. It’s a busy, happy place filled with dogs and kids and even a Shetland pony trotting about the place.

The snacks range from corn fritters, dim sum and beef noodle soup to crusty pork rolls and a range of homemade slices and tarts. Seasonal local fruit and vegetables also feature.

Once you’re full, wander next door to Reverse Garbage, the warehouse that looks like it belongs in Britain’s Biggest Hoarders (if the hoarder was slightly more organised). Jam-packed with anything from film sets to Mardi Gras floats, it’s been supplying objects for costumes, arts and crafts and an endless range of DIY projects for almost 40 years. You are guaranteed to find something you didn’t know you needed.

Starting and ending late (by market standards), it’s a perfect sunny Sunday outing. Enjoy brunch and grab ingredients for dinner. You might even find what you need for your next themed party.
