Alfalfa House
Features
Since opening in 1981, the objective of not-for-profit organic-food cooperative Alfalfa House has been to encourage sustainable food consumption practices.
The much-loved greengrocer prides itself on a friendly, community-driven atmosphere while providing seasonal, organic produce. It relies heavily on volunteers, who work two hours per week for a 25 per cent discount.
There’s an emphasis on minimal packaging and customers can bring their own containers or use the recycled containers provided. Produce is sourced from small local suppliers wherever possible in an effort to minimise transportation.
A one-off $20 joining fee gets you an ongoing 10 per cent discount, from organic sweet potatoes to environmentally conscious cleaning products. Alfalfa's egalitarian philosophy and passion for sustainability extends to the very design of the store – in 2014, staff and volunteers consulted members about their ideas before refurbishing the store using environmentally friendly materials.
Alfalfa House also supports marginalised rural communities in Palestine by working with Canaan Fair Trade, which provides the store with organic maftoul (Palestinian couscous), wild za’atar (thyme) and traditional olive-oil soap.
