Features
The line snaking out the door of Labancz Patisserie-Boulangerie is teeming with local regulars and intrigued visitors alike. The popular bakery is the vision of artisanal baker Pierre Labancz, previously a partner in Camperdown’s motorbike cafe haven Deus. Situated in a confined space with small pieces of framed artwork on the walls and a view of the lively kitchen, expect a friendly battle with the locals for one of the few tables and petite stools that look out to the street.
Brush past the crowd waiting for their takeaway coffees (a brew by Double Roasters) and head straight to the glass cabinet lined with trays of traditional French pastries. Almond croissants, pain au raisin and rhubarb Danishes are shaded by racks of sourdough rolls, multigrain and spelt loaves and baguettes that are baked in-house daily. Savoury options – served all day – are scrawled on the hanging blackboard and feature old favourites like chunky beef pies, croque monsieur and a selection of baguettes, salads and quiches.
