Rosso Pomodoro is in the top tier of pizza producers in Sydney, with its faithful patrons arguing that it seized the number one title some time ago. Opening in the White Bay end of Balmain in 2006, Rosso has managed to build and maintain a reputation for the most authentic Napoli pizza, bringing thin bases to life with simple, seasonal ingredients.

Shouting Italian staff, the constant stream of patrons picking up their orders and the proximity of the pizza oven all enliven the somewhat unprepossessing setting. With no corkage charge for BYO, it’s the perfect casual meal spot, particularly for families.

Ham and pineapple fans will be disappointed by the Rosso “rules”: only Italian toppings and no half and half. Don’t worry – there’s plenty to choose from. Top quality bresaola, rocket and parmesan, or prosciutto, porcini and Italian mozzarella (70 per cent buffalo milk) are the highlights, elegantly laid onto the mildly stone-charred, fine dough base.

If you’re lucky, they may have the special panna cotta with pomegranate molasses on the menu. If not, settle for the Nutella calzone and indulge in a simple Italian pleasure.
