After closing the doors on his Rosebery location, Kitchen By Mike, in August 2015, Mike McEnearney opened No 1 Bent St. It’s a restaurant with the same KBM ethos, this time with table service.

No 1 Bent St serves food like that at Kitchen by Mike – you’ll recognise some of the classics – but the Bent Street site allows the chef to take dishes up a notch.

The menu is seasonal, with a less-is-more approach, and it’s affordable. There is fish pie, chicken vinaigrette, and whole fish cooked on a terracotta roof tile, done in a wood-fired spit-roast oven. The team bakes bread daily, and it’s served with Pepe Saya butter.

Matt Darwon’s fit-out is minimal, allowing the aesthetics of the 100-year-old building to speak for itself. Two six-metre-long tables, made from wood from an old bridge in Canberra, are the centrepieces of the space.

No 1 Bent St closed in April 2019 and reopened as Kitchen by Mike.*
