Mary’s Pitt Street has the same ethos as its older siblings – good food, lots of booze, loud music and fun times – just in a smaller package.

The space, which opened on the Haymarket end of Pitt Street in September 2019, is smaller and more intimate than the other Mary’s venues, but no less high octane. It’s got burgundy carpets, banquette seating and moody lighting with two chandeliers made from the same iron as the balustrades in the original Mary’s. Unlike the Mary’s that came before it, this one takes bookings. Guests can reserve tables for groups of eight to 60 people – the entire venue, basically.

As for burgers, all of the classics from the canon are here. There’s the beloved cheeseburger and the Mary’s burger, fried chicken, trashcan bacon, mashed potatoes with gravy, and American-style fries. There’s also a chicken burger created as an answer to Popeye’s chicken sandwich (which dominated the internet in August 2019). As at Mary’s Circular Quay , everything on the main menu can be turned vegan.

The cocktails at Mary’s Pitt Street lean rum-based, but old favourites such as spicy Margaritas and Espresso Martinis are also available. There are more than 30 wine bottles on the list, curated by the group’s wine director, Caitlyn Rees.

In terms of music, you won’t hear as much heavy metal here. Instead, the playlist leans more towards rock’n’roll with a blues focus. Think Janis Joplin, middle years Bob Dylan, Interpol and early Black Keys.
