The burgers at Jake Chalmers are on the simple side. Owners Anthony Gentile and Toby King (a former Nun’s Pool chef) aren’t trying to break new ground. They just love soft, slightly sloppy American-style burgers. Fans of Mary’s will feel at home here.

The duo’s first spot, in Cronulla, was popular enough to land them this residency at the Friend in the Hand Hotel in early 2017, through a neighbour’s family connection.

In recognition of the down-to-earth pub location, the menu includes fish and chips; salt and pepper calamari; and a chicken schnitzel you can give a Mexican parma spin to with spicy Napoli sauce.

Cronulla staples have made the trip. There’s a classic cheeseburger; and the signature Jake Burger with beef, double cheese, mustard, beetroot relish, lettuce and tomato. And a slow-braised pork butt number with crispy kim chi wonton and Sriracha sauce. The range uses soft milk buns, American cheese and 85 to 15 meat-to-fat ratio beef patties for maximum comfort.
